Built for the British military, the
Defender 90/110 General Service (GS) Cargo was designed with simplicity,
durability and practicality firmly in mind. Today, these ex-military Defenders
offer a fascinating insight into Land Rover’s working heritage, combining
genuine military provenance with the unmistakable character of the
Defender.
Manufactured in 1993 and with just four
former keepers since its release from British Military service in 2013, this
GS-specification example retains plenty of its original military character. The
NATO green bodywork presents in smart order with only minor signs of wear, while
the chunky tyres, bonnet-mounted spare and utilitarian interior all add to its
authentic appearance. The original shovel and pickaxe are also present and
correct.
Of particular interest is the
substantial quantity of what appears to be genuine military radio and
communications equipment. Despite being identified by its serial numbers as
‘Cargo’ specification, the equipment would suggest it may have subsequently been
adapted for a Signals or communications role. The equipment is photographed but
has not been tested.
Driven over 50 miles to the
sale without issue, the Defender has a valid MOT until July 2027 and has been
running and driving well on site. Although no military maintenance records
accompany the truck, the engine bay presents particularly
well.
A highly characterful and intriguing
ex-military Defender, sure to appeal to Land Rover and military vehicle
enthusiasts alike.
