Description
Driven over 200 miles to the auction; owned by the current keeper for
the last 40 years; Ford Sierra Type-9 five speed gearbox
Manufactured in 1977 and finished in Inca Yellow, this MG Midget 1500
has been owned by the current keeper for some 40 years. During that time it was
used as an everyday car, with a number of sympathetic modifications made
primarily to improve reliability and usability. The car has covered over 200
miles to the sale and has been running and driving on site.
The original four-speed transmission has been replaced by a Ford
Sierra Type 9 five-speed gearbox, allowing the Midget to cruise comfortably at
70mph in fifth gear. An oil cooler and remote radiator header tank have also
been fitted to assist with temperature control, together with an electronic
distributor and electric fuel pump.
Further
upgrades include Frontline suspension modifications front and rear, while the
car sits on silver Minilite-style alloy wheels with Dunlop tyres. The owner
reports that the car has been developed over many years with reliability in
everyday use in mind.
The body was rebodied
approximately 20 years ago and presents well overall, although there is some
minor bubbling to the front of the bonnet. The black hood is in good order and
there is a tonneau cover sitting on the rear seats. The interior is somewhat
shabby but usable, with a new front carpet set included in the boot awaiting
fitting. A spare cylinder head is also included.
The owner’s 40-year tenure provides an unusually long period of
continuous history, and he is now selling as he approaches 80 and feels he is no
longer able to look after the car as he would wish.
Currently MOT exempt, with the Brightwells record showing an MOT
through July 2027 with no advisories, this is an interesting and well-developed
Midget 1500 that has clearly been built for use rather than simply
display.
A particularly usable Midget, with a
long-term owner, rebuilt engine and gearbox and some very worthwhile mechanical
upgrades.
