Introduced in 1959, the AEC Mandator Mk V was one of Britain's finest heavy haulage tractor units, built during the golden era of commercial vehicle engineering. Renowned for their strength, reliability and unmistakable styling, Mandators became a familiar sight on Britain's roads and were equally at home in long-distance haulage and heavy industrial service.

Today, surviving examples are highly prized by commercial vehicle enthusiasts, particularly those retaining documented factory history.

This impressive 1961 AEC Mandator Mk V, registration 465 XWD, is supported by a concise history file. Included is the original A.E.C. Ltd build sheet, identifying the vehicle as Sales Order 17081, a G4RA Series Mk V with an 8ft width and 8ft 1in wheelbase. Further confirmation from the British Commercial Vehicle Museum states that chassis number G4RA 111 was built during the week ending 14th April 1961, providing excellent provenance.

It is understood that the Mandator began life as an AEC Works Transport vehicle, spending much of its working life within the factory rather than in commercial haulage. It is believed to have entered private ownership around 1983 before eventually being registered for the road by the current vendor in 2024, following a lengthy period off the road.

Remarkably, according to the DVLA, the current vendor is the only registered keeper recorded on the V5C, which accompanies the vehicle.

Although the identity of the restorer is unknown, the tractor unit has clearly benefited from a high-quality restoration that presents extremely well today. Finished in attractive AEC Works Transport livery, it has tremendous visual presence and would make a superb exhibit at any classic commercial vehicle gathering. The restoration is substantially complete, although some finishing work remains, principally to the electrical system where the lighting requires final connection and commissioning.

The odometer currently displays just 6,800 miles. While this figure cannot be verified, the vehicle's believed factory service and relatively sheltered working life mean it remains a plausible reading. Regardless of the mileage, the overall presentation is a credit to whoever undertook the restoration.

Mechanically, the Mandator starts, runs and drives well, allowing the next owner to concentrate on completing the remaining electrical work rather than embarking on a major restoration. Offered only because of storage constraints, it presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Britain's most iconic heavy commercial vehicles.

Complete with its original factory documentation, museum confirmation, V5C and benefiting from a very smart restoration, this handsome AEC would make an outstanding addition to any serious commercial vehicle collection. Whether exhibited at rallies, used for demonstration purposes or paired with a period trailer, it is a magnificent example of British heavy haulage engineering from one of the industry's most respected manufacturers.
