Seldom seen Datsun 1200 B110 Sedan; South African import fully UK
registered; upgraded torquey 1400cc A-series engine; fitted with bucket seats
and 'Storm' racing wheels; a rare use and improve example
Introduced in 1970, the Datsun 1200 quickly earned a reputation as a
simple, reliable and surprisingly capable small car.
Known as the Sunny
in many markets, its lightweight construction, rear-wheel-drive layout and
tunable A-Series engine also made it a popular choice for motorsport. Today, the
1200 is an increasingly rare and sought-after classic, offering charming
Japanese styling, straightforward mechanicals and plenty of character in a
compact package.
Originally delivered new to
sunny South Africa as a standard 1,200cc model finished in green, this rather
striking little Datsun 1200 has since been subject to numerous upgrades and
fettling, having been imported into the UK in June 2019.
Most notably, the car has been fitted with a larger 1,400cc A-Series
engine, providing increased power and torque over the original unit, which our
vendor assures us has transformed its usability and
performance.
It is unknown when the colour change
took place, but the bronze finish suits the car, complemented by a set of
‘Storm’ racing wheels and bucket seats to create a sporty-looking
example.
The paintwork presents in usable
condition, with the more notable imperfections photographed, although these
arguably add to its charm and make it a car that can be enjoyed without undue
concern. The interior follows a similar theme, being usable and functional, with
the bucket seats proving both a comfortable and suitably sporting
addition.
The car is accompanied by a handful of
invoices relating to various rubber components and pipes, together with an
original sales brochure and workshop manual which makes a nice addition. The
Datsun drove to the sale and has continued to start, run and drive on site as
expected.
In summary, this little Datsun presents
as a sporty and distinctive ‘use and improve’ example of the breed. It could be
enjoyed just as it stands or provide an excellent basis for further development,
making this a rare and rather charming little Japanese
classic.
